One of those stupid, common question is
“Would you rather be deaf or blind?”
I usually would refuse to answer a question like that, but it got me thinking yesterday when I re-watched “Doubt”.
**Which is a great movie staring Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams and will stimulate some brain activity!**
The film gives us a wonderful euphemism about gossiping:
One day a woman goes to the priest feeling guilty about gossiping about someone she barely knows.
“Is gossiping a sin?”, she asked.
The priest decides to make her experience gossiping.
“I want you to go home, take a pillow up on your roof, cut it open with a knife, and return here to me!”
The woman did as instructed and returned back to the priest.
“What was the result”, he asked.
“Feathers”, she stumbled, “Feathers everywhere”.
“I want you to go to back and gather up every last feather that flew out in the the wind”, he directed.
It can’t be done, can it? The feathers flew away everywhere, the wind took them all over.
Unfortunately I have experienced gossiping as well.
It’s been terrible and a gossip just never seemed to end.
For that reason, if I had to choose, I’d rather be deaf.
I don’t ever want to hear gossip about myself and refuse to participate in gossiping about others.
I have been wearing my headphones, listening to music, a lot lately, also at work.
And they all just said I wasn’t social.
But maybe, all those gossipers weren’t.
Maybe they could just stopped talking about someone’s at their back.
