When English is not your first language

Some years back, I was at a course together with a colleague.
We were waiting for some time for the teacher, when the receptionist told us

“The teacher is gonna get late”,Β
she informed us.

Now in all honest, she pronounced “late” a bit like “laid”.

Of course my colleague, the joker, couldn’t just not raise his hand and ask:
“Yeah, but what if he can’t come”.
